Henley and Scheffler get back on track
After a solid Thursday and sluggish Friday, Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler were back on track Saturday for the United States in the Presidents Cup in Montreal.
They again had the biggest margin, 3 & 2, as they did in Thursday’s four-ball.
Henley didn’t compete in the Saturday morning’s four-ball, but Scheffler did, winning with Collin Morikawa as the U.S. won 3-1. In the afternoon session, Henley and Scheffler helped the U.S. to another 3-1 win, for an 11-7 lead entering Sunday’s singles.
Henley did a heap of work on Saturday as Scheffler struggled in many areas early on, Scheffler missing two gimmes inside six feet.
Henley got some early momentum by draining a 33-footer for a birdie on No.2. His 26-footer on 6 left Scheffler with a 2-inch putt for another birdie.
A 13-foot bridie putt by Henley on No. 7 put them up 2 up. The lead dropped to 1 up for two holes and then a tie for two more.
Scheffler’s 133-yard approach set up Henley for a 17-incher for a birdie on 14, the first of three in a row en route to sealing it after 16 holes. Henley went nearly 140 yards on 15 to leave Scheffler with a 13-foot birdie.
They sealed it when Henley’s 24-footer came within three feet of an eagle, Scheffler easily dropping in the hirdie.
The final day is singles matches, and Henley goes against Sungjae Im in the fourth matchup, teeing off at 12:38 p.m.
