Central Georgia's Friday night HS football roundup
Class AAA
Upson-Lee 22, Mary Persons 20, 3 OT
Niko Wells’ pop pass to Emarion Harp on the third overtime’s one-play chance gave Upson-Lee its first win over Mary Persons after 10 losses. The new overtime rule states that after two overtimes with the possession starting at the 15, the ball is placed at the 3, and each team gets one shot at a two-point score. On Mary Persons’ try in the third overtime, Upson-Lee stopped C.J. Banks.
Both teams came up with defensive stands early until Wells’ short throwback to Akeondre Chaney went for 83 yards and a score midway through the third quarter. Banks tied it on a 3-yard run four minutes later. Wells put the Knights back up early in the fourth quarter with a 1-yarder after a long kickoff return from Nytraevion Jones, Mary Persons answering on Mac Nelson’s 11-yard pass to Gavin martin with about five minutes left in the game.
The Knights missed a 47-yard field goal try on the final play of regulation and they went to overtime. Neither team scored in the first overtime, the Knights getting a TD pass from Wells to Jayden Skelton and the Bulldogs getting a run from Banks, both failing on the conversions.
Following the mid-week announcement that Mary Persons had to forfeit its wins for using an ineligible player, the Bulldogs fell to 0-5 and 0-2, while Upson-Lee improved to 3-3 and 2-2.
