Roundup: Rivalry nights go to Houston County, Warner Robins; Dublin starts slow, pulls away; more good D from Jasper County; FPD O quieted, JMA stunned again; Brentwood routs GHSA foe

Class AAAAA
Starr's Mill 35, Veterans 27
          The Warhawks dug themselves into a 22-point third-quarter hole, but rallied back to within a score in the final minute on Ro​wan Singleton’s pass to Joshau Chavous, then to Kane Byrd for the conversion, but Starr’s Mill got the kick to seal it.

Warner Robins 34, Northside 12
          Briston Blasingame returned a blocked field goal 65 yards for a touchdown to pull the Eagles within 4 at halftime. But the Demons got a Travis English 4-yard run three minutes into the third quarter and a 32-yard catch by Rasean Dinkins from Skyler Williams 7 minutes later for a 27-10 lead with 2:23 left in the third quarter. ​They pulled away in the second half for the eighth straight win over the Eagles, the longest winning streak in series history. Northside added a safety early in the fourth quarter, Warner Robins closing it out with a 7-yard run from Da’veon Latimore with 2:43 left.

Class AAAA
Houston County 31, Perry 17  
          The visiting Bears got the lead early and expanded on it, leading 17-0 midway through the second quarter until Perry scored. But Houston County answered a few minutes later on a 35-yard pass from Antwann Hill Jr. to Isaiah Mitchell in the final minute for a 24-7 lead. Perry made it a one-score game on Ahmad Gordon’s short run, but again, the Bears answered  shortly after - following a fumbled punt that Houston County recovered - with another Hill-to-Mitchell hookup, from 39 yards. Cullen McDaniel completed 31 of 48 for 281 yards and a score for Perry, Kiel Sparks grabbing 15 for 196 yards.

Jones County 28, Hampton 9
          The Greyhounds led only 14-7 at halftime, but a 60-yard TD pass from Devin Edmonds early in the third quarter added to the lead. Hampton picked up a safety a few minutes later,and it stayed at 12 points until David Little’s short TD run with about four minutes left. Devin Edmonds was 16 of 27 for 259 yards and 3 TDs, with 7 for 154 yards to Jaivon Solomon. Zacari Thomas ran for 75 yards on 166 carries for the Greyhounds.

Preseason and first-week coverage

Class AAA
Peach County 42, Berkmar 7  
          The Trojans passed the 35-point mark for the third straight time this year.

Mary Persons 43, New Westminster, B.C. 6
          The Bulldogs took control early against the visitors from Canada and cruised to a 36-6 halftime lead.

West Laurens 42, North Clayton 8
          The Raiders picked up their biggest win since beating Beach 35-0 in 2021, cracking 40 points for the first time since topping Howard 43-13 three weeks later.

Class AA
Westover 56 Westside 31
          Westover led 30-25 in the offensive show, and started pulling away midway through the third quarter en route to cracking 50 points for the first time since 1989.

Class A
ACE Charter 45 Jefferson County 0
          The visiting Gryphons’ 31-point halftime lead was more points than Jefferson County has scored in its last five-plus games. Ace Hatcher passed for 157 yards and 4 TDs, 2 to Brice Whitley, who caught 4 passes for 7 yards. Josiah Harris rushed for 77 yards and a score,also catching a TD pass. William Conn returned a fumble 38 yards for a score, and Henry Carter was perfect on 6 PATs with 4 touchbacks and a 33-yard field goal.

Bleckley County 42 East Laurens 6  
          The Royals rebounded from last week’s loss to rival Dodge County by taking over early, turning a 14-6 first-quarter lead into a 35-6 advantage at halftime with three touchdowns – a Dequavis Benjamin run, pass form Kam’ryn Everett to Tyrek Mack, and a Deondrez Robertson run.

Brentwood 41 GMC Prep 0
          The GIAA War Eagles continued their hot start to the year wit a romp over the GHSA Bulldogs. Brentwood got going two minutes into the game and led 34-0 at halftime. The War Eagles turned in their biggest shutout since beating Thomas Jefferson by the same score in 2020

Dodge County 42 Central 12
          It was a close game at halftime, Dodge County leading 12-0.

Dublin 56 Southwest 34
          Southwest did to Dublin what Dublin does to teams: strike quickly and stun. The Patriots scored twice in less than a half-minute on a 23-yard TD pass frm Steve Robinson to Jamarea Watkins and then recovering the fumbled kickoff in the end zone. The 12-0 lead lasted more than five minutes before Dublin’s Xavier Bostic went in from 19 yards out with 2:07 left in the first quarter. Dublin fully awakened in the second quarter with four touchdowns, three from Bostic on runs of 1, 53, and 12  yards, and QB Micah O’Neal adding a 9-yarder with 67 second​s left for a 36-12 halftime lead. Dublin had a 443-187 rushing advantage, while the Patriots passed for 135 yards to 18 for the Irish, who finished with a 461-322 total offense advantage on seven fewer snaps. Bostic went for 165 yards on 10 carries and 4 scores, Willie Batts for 101 on 9 and Azontae Walker for 91 on 6. Robinson gained 105 yards rushing and 135 passing for the Patriots.

Hawkinsville 41 Lanier County 16

Jasper County 17 Wilkinson County 7
          The Purple Hurricanes turned in their second straight solid defensive performance, with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, led by 4 sacks from Tymir Thornton. Grayson Manning, who had an interception, got Jasper County’s first score on a 3-yard run, then JT Thomas hit Nolan Dean with a third-quarter TD pass, Angel Martin Garcia capping the night with a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Jasper County is 2-1 for the second straight year after not starting off 2-1 since 2009.

Lake Oconee 48, Hancock Central 42
          Hancock Central led 14-0 after one and 28-14 at halftime, but Lake Oconee started creeping back and outscored Hancock Central 34-16 in the second half.

Lamar County 19, Jackson 10
          The visitors led first with a field goal, but that lasted less than two minutes before Jah’Nizae went in from 9 yards out and Caleb Miller added a field goal for a 10-3 lead at the 5:50 mark of the second quarter. Kaden Carter then took a long fumble return for a score with 1:39 left. Jackson scored early in the fourth, but gave two points back on a safety four minutes later. The Trojans were outgained 161-136 in total offense, rushing for 136 yards and passing for none, giving up 132 passing yards and 29 on the ground.

Laney 32, Putnam County 25
          Putnam County’s early lead lasted only a few minute​s, and then Laney started taking some control after leading 14-10 at halftime. It scored early in the third and then late in the third for a 26-10 lead after three. The War Eagles rallied, and got within a score on a fumble return for a touchdown with about three minutes left.

Deerfield-Windsor 33 Westfield 29
          The visiting Hornets turned a 19-14 deficit after one into a 29-19 lead early in the fourth quarter only for the Knights to answer quickly and pull within 4 and then take the lead with a long touchdown run with about four minutes left. The Hornets then struggled in a final possession, but got pas​t midfield before the clock ran out.

Mount de Sales 7, Calvary Christian 6
The Cavs’ defense made the short TD pass from Zavion DeShazier to Eli Fisher in the third quarter stand.

St. Anne-Pacelli 18, FPD 6
          The 2022 4A state champs turned in a monster defensive performance against the 2023 champs. FPD was sent backwards for 7 yards in losses on 31 carries, the Columbus Vikings dropped quarterback Bennett Lake for a staggering 51 negative yards, including plays of 18, 16, and 15 yards backwards. He and Major Simmons combined t go 12 of 24 for 158 yards passing, but the Vikings were held to only Simmons’ 15-yard TD pass to Tinsley Lewis in the final minute of the first half to tie it at 6. Pacelli, which ran for 130 yards and passed for 64, got a 21-yard run for the lead with 4:07 left in the third and a 5-yarder at the 3:38 mark of the fourth to seal it, and get its first win of the season while FPD dropped to 2-1.

Stratford 48, Pinewood Christian 7  
          Tyler Stephens ran for 180 yards and QB Connor Fitzpatrick added 106 yards to go with 159 through the air as the Eagles rolled, Fitzpatrick rushing for 3 touchdowns and passing for 2 more. Stephens, a 5-8, 160-pound junior, was a mess for the Patriots to corral, with 11 carries of at least 10 yards, a few more that were wiped out, including an eye-popping display early in the third quarter. Fitzpatrick had an equally impressive 12-yard touchdown run, when the first contact came in the backfield, and he staggered and bounced the rest of the way to the short side of the field. It was 34-0 at halftime.

Tattnall 20, George Walton 14
          The Trojans trailed 14-6 at halftime and tied it heading into the fourth quarter with a touchdown and conversion. They got a game-winning touchdown in the final two minutes.

Tiftarea 46, John Milledge 21
          John Milledge was in a 20-0 hole into the second quarter before getting a Kolt McMichael run and TD pass to David Todd to pull within 19-14. Tiftarea responded with a 63-yard run and 22-yard pass for a 32-14 halftime lead. Tiftarea had a 371-121 rushing advantage, the Trojans taking a 197-149 passing edge. McMichael passed for 168 yards as John Milledge fell to 1-2 for the first time since the Trojans went 0-10 in 2009. The 46 points w​ere the most they’ve allowed since that same season in a 47-7 loss to Mount de Sales.

CFCA 24, St. Andrew’s 20
          The Lancers trailed 20-10 at halftime before rallying. Judson Walls scored 3 times with nearly 180 rushing yards behind a line led by Jack Sipps’ 6 pancake blocks. Cole Phillips added a 25-yard field goal, and Maddox Railey keyed the defense.
