Henley sizzles through par 5s for good BMW opener

The first hole of a tournament and par 5s have not been great for Russell Henley.

          And then came Thursday.

On a course he’s never played and in a state the PGA hasn’t visited in a decade, Henley opened the BMW Championship in style, with a birdie on the par-5 No. 1 en route to an impressive 2-under 70.

Henley sits in a tie for 10th with an impressive group of four others: J.T. Poston, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and Tony Finau. They’re four shots back of leader Keegan Bradley, the last player to make the 50-member field for the second FedEx Cup playoff tournament.

Henley ended up with one of his best rounds in his battle with par 5s, racking up birdies on three of the four and parring the last, not a bogey in site on those holes.

That wasn’t the case on the par-3 No. 7 and par-4 No. 5. He found the rough off the tee on No. 7, and hit a bunker on his second shot on 9, barely missing right on a par try.

On No. 1, Henley got up and down nicely from the left rough with a good chip inside a half-dozen feet. He had a quality par save on 12 and 14, and was just off on several putts under 20 feet.

On the other hand, he tied for the fifth for the longest drive of the day, finish with a better-than-normal ranking of 18th in driving distance, averaging 319 yards topped by a 417-yarder.

In the 13 stats for the round posted by www.pgatour.com, Henley is in the top 20 in all but one, 35th in shots gained/approach to green, unofficially one of his best statistical rounds in a long time.

On the other hand, the four par-5 holes ranked 17th, 18th, with two tied for 15th. On the five toughest holes, Henley bogeyed two, birdied two, and parred one.

He tees off at 10:40 a.m. Friday with Sam Burns. The Golf Channel starts broadcasting at 2 p.m., action otherwise on ESPN-Plus.
