Baldwin mourns death of assistant coach Smith
Less than three years after its diagnosis, cancer claimed Baldwin teacher and coach Seticia Smith on June 19.
Smith, 36, coached and taught at Oak Hill Middle, but aided in varsity softball, girls basketball and track at Baldwin. She was the school district’s teacher of the year for 2021-22, but had to resign from her athletics duties late in 2021 to deal with treatment.
According to the Milledgeville Union-Recorder, she was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive cancer, had surgery and then chemotherapy, but continued teaching.
The Georgia College graduate – she had three degrees from the school - had another surgery in July of 2022.
A balloon release will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Baldwin’s football stadium.
