Maconite Bevill to be inducted into Georgia Southern Hall of Fame

Leonard Bevill, the former owner of Macon Occupational Medicine, and a two-time graduate of Georgia Southern, will be inducted into the GSU Athletics Hall of Fame this fall.

Bevill graduated in 1990 and added a degree in 1993.

He was the athletic foundation’s chair from 201-23 and led it to the largest fund-raising total in school history. He is an Oak Circle member, the highest level of donors, chipping in to the Anthony P. Tippins Family Training Center.

Since getting out of the occupational medicine field, he spearheaded the Eagle Nation NILL Collective.

          Here’s the full class.

A Mercer Tennis Classic influence in the Paris Olympics

Alums of the Mercer Tennis Classic continue to do well, and now, some will represent America in the Paris Olympics.

The U.S women’s team, headed by world No. 2 Coco Gauff, includes three world top-20 singles players who have competed in Macon:

No. 5. Jessica Pegula and No. 11 Danielle Collins played in Macon in 2016, while No. 17 Emma Navarro was a three-time visitor, from 2020-22.

Henley was rolling along, and then on 18 …

After two rugged days, Russell Henley found a comfort zone on Saturday at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

A couple birdies on the front nine, and the back-to-back birdies on tbe back nine had Henley 4 under par, a place he hadn’t been in awhile.

But two shots into trouble led to a bogey on 18, the lone spot on a 3-under third round, even through three rounds.

Not that it helped much on the leaderboard, Henley improving only six spots to get up to a tie for 61st, with Jordan Spieth and Harris English, 18 back of leader Tom Kim.
