Henley opens up at Traveler’s with decent round

Russell Henley is with some good company.

There are nine players tied for 44th over the first round of the Traveler’s Championship, and six are ranked in the top 50 of the FedExCup listing, with winners of the US Open, a former No. 1 and three-time major winner, and regular contenders.

They’re all at even, with another 11 at 1 under, all behind leader Tom Kim, who shot an 8-under 62

Henley, off a top-10 finish at the U.S. Open, turned in a rare smooth and bogey-free front nine, a streak that ended on No. 10. And somewhat uncharacteristically, he ended the first round with a birdie.

After a good putting weekend, Henley is off to a sluggish start on the green, missing five birdie putts inside 10 feet. He’s 58th in the field in putting and tied for 65th in putts per greens in regulation.

He tees off at 8:50 a.m. on Friday in his seventh Travelers, in which he’s made five cuts and finished no worse than tied for 32nd. He had tied for 19th in his last two visits, in 2023 and 2021.
