Henley finishes strong at Valero, new career OWGR ranking

What looked to be Russell Henley’s worst hole of the weekend, one that would likely drop him down the leaderboard a good bit, turned out to be one of the best bogeys imaginable.

The 5 on the par-4 ninth hole was Henley’s lone blemish of the day, but an inspiring hole en route to a fourth-place finish at the Valero Open.

Henley recorded his third 69 of the weekend for a 10-under 278, good for sole possession of fourth place, 10 shots behind Akshay Bhatia and Denny McCarthy, Bhatia winning after a one-hole playoff.

The 472-yard par-4 No. 9 hadn’t been too nice to Henley, who bogeyed it on Friday and Saturday.

His 283-yard tee shot landed in the native area rough to the left, and he drove a shot off a tree that went 92 feet sideways, and left him 218 yards from the hole. His fourth shot was near-perfect, covering 130 yards and allowing him to tap in a 4-footer for bogey.

Two holes earlier, Henley hit the flagstick in the air off the tee.

He was solid after that, with seven straight pars before closing the day out with two birdies, barely missing on a few putts that would’ve led to a better score.

Henley takes some quality momentum – plus a $450,800 check for the weekend - into this week’s Masters, beyond the strong finish.

In seven events this year, Henley has three top-5 finishes, with one missed cut. Of 29 rounds, he’s shot under 70 in 16, with 73 as his worst round (three times).

He also enters his eighth Masters a year after his best finish in Augusta, tying for fourth, after a first-round 73. Henley has also reached No. 17 in the Official World Golf Ranking, a career best, topping the No. 22 mark he reached earlier this season.
