Henley stays in contention at Valero
He’s not making it any easier on himself, but Russell Henley eased past a rough run with a solid finish and enter the final round of the Valero Open in Texas in the top five.
Henley and the other contenders will need a monster Sunday and some hiccups from leader Akshay Bhatia to make the final round overly interesting.
Bhatia has a four-shot lead over Denny McCarthy, and is seven up on Brendon Todd and eight on Henley and Hideki Matsuyama.
Henley got off to a nice start with a birdie on 2, but then racked up bogeys on 5, 9, and 10 to go 2 over. Three pars later, he birdied 14, 16, and 17 to get back under par for the day and return to the hunt as play slowed late in the day.
The birdie on 17 was sweet, Henley dropping a 56-yard shot to a foot from the hole. His tee shot on 18 – which he birdied on Thursday and Friday - hit the left rough, but he got back on the fairway easily, 110 yards to the pin.
A 15-footer for his fourth birdie in the final five holes awaited, and he was just short, settling for par.
