Promotions galore for Mayhem’s home finale

Rough start for Henley turns into smooth round

          Russell Henley could be forgiven if he mumbled “here we go” on the fourth hole Thursday of the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

          Two shots found the rough, and he three-putted for a double bogey.

          Henley regrouped nicely en route to a 3-under 69, which was good for a tie for eighth with eight other players, six shot behind leader Akshay Bhatia.

          The Stratford grad was even by the end of the front nine, with birdies on 6 and 8. Then he birdied 11, 14, and 18 for a solid finish.

          This is only his third Valero, and he’s off to a much better start than the first two, when he missed the cut (2016) and finished tied for 52nd in 2019.
