Henley off to rugged start at Players
The putter that Russell Henley had last week at times stayed in the past, as far as the first round of The Players Championship went.
Henley muddled through a 1-over 73 round on Thursday at Ponta Vedra and TPC Sawgrass, tied with loads of players for 88th in the 143-player field.
He was 56th in putting and 84th around the green, struggling in greens in regulation and approach to green. Still, thanks to some driving accuracy and total putts, he had a fairly respectable score, only eight shots back of the tri-leaders.
His day began with a bogey, and ended with a par. He followed a bogey with birdie on 6 and 7, then countered them later on the back nine.
Henley didn’t have many routine holes, missing some of the putts he nailed last week when he contended all weekend and finished tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He tied for 19th at The Players Championship, opening only one shot better than this year.
