Around/About Central Georgia

Hester’s next task: running for Bibb BOE seat

From the early 1970s to 2012, Barney Hester was a private-school guy, as a coach and administrator.

Hester left Tattnall in 2013, and spent the next five seasons as a public-school head coach, and then took over as Bibb County athletics director until the end of 2021.

Now, he’s back, on a field. Not the football field, though.

The legendary coach is now a candidate for the Bibb County Board of Education District 4 seat. He looks to fill the seat vacated by Juawn Jackson, who recently announced his candidacy for the House District 145 seat.

He made the announcement Monday night in a release, hoping to continue a “legacy of supporting teachers, including parents, and always putting students first.”

He and his wife Lynn are longtime owners owned Northside Prep Learning Centers, which has a building on Northside Drive and downtown.

“I’m ready to put my 47 years experience, as a coach, educator and administrator, to work supporting our teachers and providing the best possible opportunities for our students,” Hester said in the release. “This is the principle that will guide my service on the school board.”

Hester retired as a coach after the 2017 season with a 340-167-9 record – according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association website - at Josey Academy, Gordon-Ivey, Tattnall, and Howard.

He was the Bibb County athletics director from March 2018 until the end of 2021.
