Thursday’s high school football scouting reports

Class AAA

Baldwin, 4-3/4-1, at Howard, 4-3/3-2

Baldwin is bucking for its first home playoff game since 2019 and maybe its first region title – three wins and some help and it can happen – since 2018. Howard needs wins and some help to squeeze into the playoffs, and this is the Huskies’ first must-win scenario. The Braves – who don’t post stats on MaxPreps – have won four of their last five, scoring at least 40 points in three of them. Sadur Salahuddin has 7 rushing TDs and 587 yards, while quarterback Lamar Pounds has completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 1,039 yards and 5 touchdowns, but 4 interceptions. Howard counters with RBs Jacolbie Allen, Kameron Clark, and QB Deon Wellons. The Braves are more balanced on offense.

West Laurens, 7-1/5-1, at Westside-Augusta, 6-2/4-2

The defenses have some playmakers to deal with. West Laurens’ Ty Cummings is good for 147.5 yards a game on the ground and Westside’s Jeanarion Kamga gets 119.8. Kamga has been held to 112 yards in the last two games, by Harlem and Baldwin. Harlem has beaten both teams, 28-7 over West Laurens and 24-0 over Westside. West Laurens is looking for its first region title since 2019.

Class A/Division I

Bleckley County, 2-6/1-6, at Central 0-8/0-7

The Royals – who stopped updating MaxPreps stats – look to avoid a huge upset and stay in the posteason hunt. They’re on the fringe, amid their worst season record-wise since going 2-8 in 2016. Thanks mostly to a 42-6 win over East Laurens, they have positive scoring numbers, plus 24. They’ve lost by 3, 1, 4, 3, and 1 in overtime, indications of a team who might surprise in the postseason. The Chargers will set a school record for fewest points in a season while trying to avoid their first winless year in program history.
