GHSA softball: Good day for West Laurens, not for Houston County, ACE, GMC Prep, East Laurens (updated)

Class 5A

Lassiter 11, Houston County 0, 5 inn.

The Bears had a rough evening at the plate and on the field, being outhit 11-5 and doubling up Lassiter with four errors, although they led to only two unearned runs, Houston County pitching walking four with no strikeouts. The Bears (23-11) were shut out for the first time this season, and gave up double-digit runs for only the second time this season.

Class 4A

West Laurens 5, LaGrange 2, 8 inn.

          The Raiders came up clutch late with CheyAnn Phillips’ three-run homer in the top of the eighth did the damage for West Laurens. Katelynn Wilson had a second-inning homer to pull the Raiders within 2-1, and both teams were held scoreless until West Laurens tied it in the top of the seventh when Ava Collins drove in courtesy runner Allie Sahli, the Raiders stranding two runners. Phillips struck out six with a walk in the complete-game win.

Class A/Division I

Bremen 7, East Laurens 3

          Bremen took control early and scored in the first four innings, East Laurens being outhit 7-2 and both teams committing three errors.

          The Falcons scored first in the top of the opening inning on two walks, two stolen bases by Jon’Nica Russell, and a sacrifice bunt, but the Blue Devils countered with three in the bottom half, and then single runs in the next two innings and two in the fourth. The Falcons (22-8) managed two in the sixth, but that was it.

Toombs County 14, ACE Charter 0, 4 inn.

          Toombs County took control with four runs in the second and dealt the knockout punch with eighth in the fourth to hand the Gryphons their first shutout of the season and worst loss while being held to one hit.
