FVSU’s Gibbs to visit Touchdown Club

Third-year Fort Valley State head coach Shawn Gibbs is Monday’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30. Membership for the year is $250.

Mercer’s Mike Jacobs is next week’s speaker, followed by Florida A&M’s James Colzie a week later.

Gibbs was hired in Feb. of 2022.

Maurice Flowers resigned after one full and a partial season lto take over at Johnson C. Smith, his alma mater. Flowers was Fort Valley State’s sixth head coach since 2000, following Kent Schoolfield (1997-2002), John Morgan (2003-2005), Deondre Clark , (2006-08), Donald Pittman (2009-16), Kevin Porter (2017-2019).

Gibbs went 8-2 and 8-3 in his first two years, the first time FVSU had consecutive eight-win seasons oin 24 years. The Wildcats are 4-2, and off a 49-40 homecoming win over Allen. They play FCS South Carolina State this week.

Gibbs was a standout player at Owen High in Black Mountain, N.C., graduating in 1992 as the program’s all-time leading rusher with 4,655 yards. He led North Carolina Central in rushing in 1996 and 1997, and started his coaching career in 2002 s a volunteer coach at North Carolina A&T.

Most of Gibbs’ coaching career has been on the FCS level, with a stint from 2003-06 at Division II North Carolina Central. He moved to Grambling in 2007, then returned to North Carolina to join the A&T staff as running backs coach and assistant head coach in 2011.

A&T won five MEAC titles and four Celebration Bowl trophies while Gibbs was there, his duties also including recruiting coordinator and special teams work.

Mercer Tennis Classic gets going

Qualifying for the Mercer Tennis Classic starts Monday morning at John Drew Smith Tennis Center.

Second-seeded qualifier Maria Kozyreva and fifth seed Alexandra Vecic are among those set for the first matches at 10 a.m.

Main draw competition begins on Tuesday.
