A four-run third sparked the Gryphons, who got two-hit nights from Karsyn Yates, Shaniyah Gibson, Reese Thames, and Madisyn Hallar, Yates and Thames with two RBI each. Taylor Mosteller had four hits for the Bulldogs.

Bleckley County 4, Swainsboro 2

Brentwood 9, Briarwood 5

Cadence English hit homers on consecutive at-bats to lead Brentwood.

Dublin 14, Montgomery County 11

Caitlyn Nesbitt drove in five runs on three hits for the Irish, two RBI coming on a second-inning triple as Dublin overcame a 11-5 deficit after two, shutting out Montgomery County in the final five at-bats while scoring nine in the final four innings to survive six errors.

FPD 13, Covenant 3

Houston County 5, West Laurens 2

Jacy Harrelson whiffed 12 in a two-hitter for the Bears. Harrelson and Hayley McElroy each had two hits and teamed for five RBI for the Bears, who visit Northside on Friday.

Howard 10, Central 2

Anna Nash went all five innings and struck out nine to lead Howard, which took advantage of five Central errors. Nakeria Mallory, Jayla Evans, and Jenesia Jackson each had two hits for the Huskies, Jackson scoring three times and driving in two runs. Howard (2-2) hosts Warner Robins on Monday, and Central (1-1) welcomes Rutland on Tuesday.

Lamar County 13, Spalding 0, 4 inn.

Shakiria Foster drove in four runs for the Trojans, who got two-hit games from her, Lauren Wilcher, Autumn Hinkley, Morgan Strickland, Emily Zavala, and Hailey Stanley.

Mount de Sales 4, Heritage 3

The Cavs scored two in the seventh for the walk-off. Sawyer Stuart fanned 13 with only two walks, and had two hits, along with Cailey Lindsey, Riley Mullis, and Taylor Jones.

Alexia Heyward’s six aces and three kills led Peach County in the first game, whil Kelly Blackmon and Demechia Walker had four kills each in the second game. Peach County (1-1) is in a tri-match at Crisp County next Thursday.

Howard, Rutland open football season with big wins

Anthony Williams became the second head coach in Rutland history to win his first game in the job, and Howard won its third straight season opener on Thursday.

Rutland took care of Towers 26-6 while Howard rolled over Southwest 42-6.

It’s the Hurricanes largest margin of victory in a non-region game against a team from outside of Bibb County in the same classification or higher since beating Spalding 42-23 in 2013 when both were in Class AAAA. Rutland improved to 5-5 in its last 10 games against teams outside of Bibb County.

Howard has won its last three openers by 42-6, 45-12, and 16-7 (Southwest twice, and Central), the Huskies pulling away in the second quarter.

Southwest countered Ethan Ellington’s short TD run four minutes into the game with an 88-yard scoring pass from Chase Dupree to Malik Sands barely a minute later.

The Huskies saw enough, eventually.

Ellington followed a muffed punt with a score at the 5:33 mark of the second quarter, and Cam Taylor went 31 yards for a touchdown after a turnover a minute later. Jacolbie Allen finished off a nice drive with a touchdown and a 28-6 lead with about three minutes left in the half.

Howard’s passing game clicked less than four minutes into the third quarter when Taylor connected with Nate Campbell for another score. The defense came up with four interceptions.

Howard faces Central next Thursday at Ed DeFore, Southwest and Westside play on the same field next Friday, the same night Rutland hosts Hawkinsville.

Henley in top 20 at BMW

The first eight holes were pretty good for Russell Henley, but the next 10 a little less so.

Henley was 4-under through eight, but had three bogeys the rest of the way to settle for a 1-under first round of the BMW Championship, and tie for 18th with five others.

That group is four shots back of co-leaders Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman.

Henley tees off at 1:16 p.m. Friday, with Nick Taylor.
