Three more Central Georgians picked in MLB draft

          A recent high school graduate, a local alum of a few years ago, and a Mercer player gave Central Georgia three more MLB draft picks.

          The trio went Tuesday on the final day, rounds 11-20.

          Versatile Houston County pitcher and first baseman Andrew Dunford went to Detroit with the sixth pick of the 12th round, 350th overall.

          The 6-7, 230-pound Mercer commit belted seven homers with 50 RBI while batting .489. On the hill, he went 8-2 with a save, and a 2.24 ERA., going 8-2 overall with a save, 2.24 ERA.

          He had 59 strikeouts and 26 walks in 59.1 innings in helped the Bears to their second Class 6A state title in three years and earn top-20 national rankings. He went 5.1 innings in one of the championship series games, striking out six with a walk.

          FPD grad Austin Emener, who started his college career at North Alabama before transferring to East Tennessee State, went in the 16th round, 472nd overall, to Colorado.

          In two seasons at North Alabama of the ASUN Conference, he was 0-4 with ERAs of 8.40 and 6.56, 86 strikeouts and 60 walks in 76.2 innings. At ETSU, he went 2-4 in 15 games with eight starts, a 5.40 ERA, 62 strikeouts and 40 walks in 53.1 innings.

          For the Macon Bacon, before being called up to the Cape Cod League,

          Josh Harlow, a sophomore from North Carolina, was Mercer’s lone pick, going in the 19th round to Cleveland.

          Harlow went 4-1 for the Bears with a 2.15 ERA, 35 strikeouts and eight walks in 29.1 innings. He fanned 11 against William & Mary, and gave up only four home runs.

          He entered the season as one of Mercer’s top two pitchers after going 7-2 with a 4.92 ERA as a freshman, striking out 84 with 27 walks in 67.2 innings.

          He missed nearly two months of the 2023 season with an injury, and was in the transfer portal, considering South Carolina and Arkansas among other schools.

Macon takes over first in division overall

          A slew of one-run innings was just enough to hold off Forest City’s late rally and give Mercer a 4-3 win to take over first in the Coastal Plain West Division.

          Jackson Cherry and Jorge Pereira each had two hits for Macon, Pereira and Jarrett Jenkins each with two RBI.

          The Bacon have the best overall record in the West for the season, and are tied for second in the second half. They visit Lexington County on Wednesday and host the Blowfish on Thursday.
