A tale of two nines for Henley

The first nine holes Thursday for Russell Henley? Sure looked like the Stratford grad was set to be in contention for the weekend at The Travelers in Connecticut.

The second nine holes Thursday for Russell Henley? The round put Henley in the “might be traveling from the Travelers before Saturday” category.

Henley went from hot to sweating and sits in a tie for 68th after one round of The Travelers.

It’s appreciated.

The afternoon got off to such a nice start, with a birdie on his first hole followed three holes later by Henley’s first eagle of the 2022-23 season, and then a birdie, putting him at 4-under through five holes.

Then he finished the first nine with four pars and started the second nine with another one.

A cold front then found Henley, and he bogeyed four of the next eight holes, with one birdie, a seven-shot difference from his first nine.

That dropped him to a still-nice 69, but way off from the way things were after 10 holes.

The cut is the top 65 plus ties. Henley is one of 24 at 68th, with another 14 one shot back.

Henley tees off at 7:25 a.m. Friday, with Si Woo Kim (2 over) and Ryan Brehm (4 over).
