Georgia Sports Hall of Famer on U.S. Women’s World Cup roster
A little less than three years ago, Kelley O’Hara was in Macon as part of the Class of 2020 going into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
And she wore the dark blue jacket of the new members during her short speech.
Now, she’ll be wearing some red, white, and blue as a member of the U.S. Women’s National soccer team for the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
She’ll be doing it for the fourth time (2011, 2015, 2019).
O’Hara joined Adrian Peterson (Georgia Southern football), Eddie Lee Ivery (Georgia Tech football), Gary Colson (Valdosta State men’s basketball), Lonnie Bartley (FVSU women’s basketball), Willie Anderson (UGA basketball and NBA), Jeff Treadway (Atlanta Braves) and Bobby Pope (Mercer) on that February night at the Macon City Auditorium.
O’Hara is from Fayetteville and played at Starr’s Mill and then Stanford. Emily Sonnett, a defender, hails from Marietta and graduated from Fellowship Christian – losing to FPD 1-0 in the GHSA Class A state championship in 2012 – before continuing at Virginia.
