Austin Cox (FPD/Mercer) back in the bigs
As expected, Kansas City gave Austin Cox another call to come to the majors.
Cox was brought up from AAA Omaha last week to take the place of Josh Staumont, who was put on the 15-day injured list with a neck strain.
He has pitched in three games, covering 5.2 innings against Baltimore, Cincinnati, and the L.A. Angels. He struck out three against Baltimore and LA, - including superstar Shohei Ohtani, and has yet to give up a hit, allowing two walks. Of his 76 pitches, 50 have been strikes.
Cox spent barely a day with the Royals in early May, when he threw two shutout innings against Baltimore in his debut but was returned to the minors the same day.
Said manager Matt Quatraro after Cox’s first game back: “He throws strikes, his breaking ball looked good. I thought in the second inning, there was velo, it seemed like it ticked up a little.
“He did everything you would hope for, and more, so it was very impressive.”

Henley finds groove to contention at US Open; Carr struggles
Russell Henley didn’t go bogey free, but he stayed on point and moved into a tie for 20th after three rounds of the US Open in Los Angeles.
He had three birdies in his first seven holes, hit a run of pars before a bogey on 14 and 17 with a birdie on 15.
A 27-foot putt for birdie was too fast, and the seven-foot shot zipped past for a three-putt No. 14.
His short game hurt him again on 17. He got out of the rough and was 23 feet away, but just missed a par putt.
Henley is in the top15 in fairways hit, greens in regulation, strokes gained on approach and off the tee. He’s tied for 37th in driving distance and is 31st in number of putts.
Ben Carr (Georgia Southern) went a bit off the rails with a 5-over day to go 7-over for the tournament, and tie for 59th.
He had a birdie and two bogeys on the front nine, but the back nine took control, with three bogeys and a double bogey to one birdie.
Macon rolls on the road
A 7-0 lead after three innings was more than enough for Macon to roll Lexington County 12-2 for its fourth straight win.
Jarrett Jenkins had a night, going 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI. Connor Hill, John-Reagan Freethy, and Mason Minzey each had two hits, Freethy scoring three times and Hill and Minzey twice.
Mercer’ Jaxon O’Neal whiffed eight with a walk in six innings for the win.
The Bacon visit Forest City on Monday and Lexington County on Wednesday.
A split Macon team lost at home to the Catawba Valley All-Star 5-2 in exhibition play.
