Jones County, Tattnall alums help Georgia Gwinnett in national tournament
A pair of Central Georgia high school alums from Jones County and Tattnall helped Georgia Gwinnett College’s softball team to a strong run in the NAIA national tournament in Columbus at the South Park Commons complex.
Logan Oller is a junior catcher-outfielder from Tattnall, and Kloey Goins is a junior outfielder from Jones County.
The championship round in Columbus started on May 25.
The Grizzlies’ third elimination game ended up being their final one, a 6-0 loss Monday afternoon to Marian, Ind. Both area players went hitless, the Grizzlies held to only three hits in the season finale.
Georgia Gwinnett opened the finals round with a 5-1 loss to Southern Oregon, then beat Baker, Kansas 6-2 and Central Methodist (Missouri) 9-7 in elimination games.
In the win over Central Methodist, Oller went 2 for 3 with two runs, including a double that put two into scoring position, while Goins struggled through an 0-for-4 outing.
A day earlier, in the win over Baker, Goins went hitless but drove in a run, and Oller went 0 for 1.
Georgia Gwinnett finished 45-12.
Oller finished sixth among regulars with a .281 average, while Goins was next at .234. Goins is fourth with 32 RBI and second with nine doubles, also swiping 10 steals in 12 tries. Both fielded at nearly a .990 clip.
