Central Georgia’s Positive Athlete winners

Two dozen high schools from Central Georgia are represented in this year’s Positive Athlete awards.

The program, according to its website, recognizes and celebrates “high character, high school student-athletes and coaches who have overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools and communities in a significant way, or just have an infectious positive attitude that makes everyone around them a better person.”

The group picks from Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Crawford, Dodge, Hancock, Houston, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Monroe, Montgomery, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox & Wilkinson counties for this area.

          As of Wednesday, the group had yet to post winners for Southwest and Southeast Georgia, as well as Northeast and Northwest. Overall, it has 14 regions in Georgia.

Brentwood girls win GIAA tennis title

Second-seeded Brentwood won the Class AA girls GIAA team tennis state title on Wednesday at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center in south Bibb County.

The school posted the accomplishment on Facebook a little after 5 p.m.

The GIAA posted nothing regarding team tennis results on social media, and hasn’t posted same-day results for tennis, the individual tournament last week or this week’s team tournament. There was no update on Wednesday’s action as of 3 a.m. Thursday. Tuesday’s action wasn’t updated until Wednesday.

Brentwood beat Covenant, which opened with a win over Oak Mountain. Trinity Christian followed a bye as the third seed with a loss to Augusta Prep.

The War Eagles then beat Augusta Prep in a semifinal, and then either Westwood or Southwest Georgia in the championship, winning their fourth GISA/GIAA title since 2016.

Brentwood’s boys beat Robert Toombs and LaGrange to reach the AA semifinal against Grace Christian. No results were posted.

Trinity Christian, seeded fourth, had a bye but was beaten by Westwood, which played Augusta Prep in the other semifinal.

FPD’s girls had a first-round bye, then beat Fulton Science, and took on Deerfield-Windsor in a semifinal.

Stratford’s boys were knocked out in the AAA semifinal 3-0 to Rivers.

FPD’s boys were beaten by Deerfield-Windsor in the first round.
