Girls
LaGrange 50, Fullington 32
A one-point game at halftime started going LaGrange’s way in the third quarter, and it took over with a 13-3 fourth quarter en route to the GIAA Class A title.
Piedmont 82, Citizens Christian 65
The Cougars led only 55-51 after three, but put away the GIAA Class AA championship in the fourth quarter. Piedmont lost 54-30 to Brentwood in last year’s championship and falling 61-49 to Westwood in the semifinals two years ago. Piedmont, 21-9, opened the postseason as the No. 4 seed, and beat the No. 3 seed – which lost the Class A title in OT last year - for its first title.
Warner Robins 62, Calhoun 53
The halftime chat was a pretty good one.
Warner Robins was down 31-26 at halftime of its GHSA Class 5A semifinal at West Georgia, Calhoun beating the Demonettes in transition and taking advantage of some slow defensive reactions to hit from the perimeter.
But that lead was gone, and for good, early in the third quarter, a 25-9 period for Warner Robins, and the Demonettes retaining control in the fourth for their first trip to the finals since the 1995-96 season.
Warner Robins improved to 28-2, and faces Kell – a 56-37 winner over Jackson-Atlanta – on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Macon Coliseum. Calhoun’s season ended at 25-5.
The game was tied at 14 after one, thanks to Tasia Agee’s short bucket in the final seconds. Calhoun went on a 6-0 run for a 23-18 lead, and the margin at the break would’ve been more had Agee not drained a 3 from the left side with two seconds left.
The momentum stayed with Warner Robins. Tori Davis nailed a 3 from the left side 17 seconds into the third quarter, and Agee put Warner Robins up for good 24 seconds later with her 3 from the left corner.
Calhoun regained the lead for all of 18 seconds when Davis countered a Yellow Jackets’ 3 with one of her own, which she followed with another one at the 5:27 mark.
It was tied at 40 with 3:58 left in the third, Calhoun missing a chance for the lead with a short free throw at the 3:00 mark, Davis taking advantage with a 17-footer on the Demonettes’ next trip.
The Yellow Jackets continued a one-and-done quarter, Warner Robins finishing the period with a 9-0 final 2:20.
Calhoun got only within seven in the fourth quarter, but late, in the final 90 seconds.
Agee led the Demonettes with 25 points, while Davis chipped in another 16, all but one on 3s.
Boys
Eagle’s Landing 66, Jones County 54
For awhile, it was a fairly typical No. 1 vs. No. 4 seed game.
The No. 1 seed, which had already won three teams against this No. 4 seed, led 13-2 in the first quarter, 20-6 after one, and 33-18 at halftime.
Eagle’s Landing added two to the lead in the third quarter, but Jones County never caved, and the margin dropped to 11 after three.
The Greyhounds made the Eagles sweat, but Eagle’s Landing regrouped and held off Jones County in a GHSA Class 5A semifinal at West Georgia.
Jones County’s season and Cinderella tournament – the fourth seed was a road warrior - ended at 21-13, while Eagle’s Landing improved to 29-1.
Jaylen Sanford hti on of two at the line to open the fourth and pull Jones County within 10 for the first time since midway through the first quarter. His runner off glass started a 7-0 run that pulled the Greyhounds suddenly within 47-44 with 5:35 left in the game.
Eagle’s Landing caught its breath and responded with a bucket low and then a 3-pointer for an eight-point lead. Jones County got no closer than six, for the final time with 1:34 left on Sanford’s drive.
Eagle’s Landing won all four meetings with Jones County: 69-62, 55-45, and 68-38.
Sanford led Jones County with 15 points, Kaden Douglas adding 11 and Judd Anderson – slowed by foul trouble – chipping in 10.
