The road to a Southern Conference basketball tournament title is more difficult than expected months ago for Mercer’s men and women.

The men were picked to seventh by coaches and media, and they’ll open the tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. as the eighth seed, taking on No. 9 The Citadel, which finished where it was predicted. The two just played on Saturday, Mercer rolling 72-50.

The winner faces top seed and preseason favorite Furman at noon on Saturday.

Mercer plays in the women’s tournament second game, as the fifth seed, against No. 4 UNC Greensboro, at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mercer was the consensus pick, by coaches and media, to win the conference, UNC-G starting the season at No. 7/6 out of eight. Wofford was expected to contend, and is the top seed, the Terriers opening with No. 8 Western Carolina at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Those two winners play at 11 a.m. on Friday. The championship is Sunday at noon.

All tournament games are at the Cherokee Center-Asheville in North Carolina.
