Help wanted: Dodge County
Speculation of the past few weeks became reality on Monday, that Dodge County is again in the market for a head football coach and athletics director.
The school posted the opening on www.teachgeorgia.org., among other places.
Thomas Smith is departing after one seasons, ostensibly to return to Wheeler County. He left there to take the Dodge County job, which opened last February when Ray Hardin resigned after two seasons. He followed Ken Cofer, who resigned after two seasons.
Smith went 11-20 in three seasons at Wheeler County after a successful run at GIAA Robert Toombs. Ingle resigned reportedly to tend to family health issues.
Dodge County is Central Georgia’s second opening. Baldwin fired longtime head coach Jesse Hicks last week.
Help wanted: Twiggs County
The merry-go-round at Twiggs County is spinning, with the school posting an opening for head football coach on www.teachgeorgia.org as well.
The next coach will be the program’s 12th this century.
Patrick Wray was promoted from within in late June. Former GMC assistant coach Tommy Howell accepted the job in May, but withdrew a day later.
The job initially became open when head coach Irade Perry moved to strictly athletics director. He went 4-26 in three seasons, the school suspending play in 2020 because of COVID-19.
Twiggs County went 0-9 in 2023, part of a 4-55 run since 2017, including consecutive winless seasons in 2017-18.
A good GHSA coin toss forrr …
For the second week in a row, the GHSA coin toss came up heads.
So same-seeded teams meeting in the semifinals next week will head to the home of the team on the top part of the bracket.
That brings joy to the locker rooms and ticket offices at Warner Robins and Mary Persons.
Perry would travel regardless, to No.1s Central-Carrollton or Starr’s Mill. Third seed Macon County also is automatically on the road, at either Clinch County or region rival Manchester.
Possibility visiting McConnell-Talbert: Harris County or Jefferson.
Mary Persons would be at home regardless, against either No. 1 Calvary Day or No. 2 Wesleyan.
Mercer playoff tickets on sale
Tickets for Mercer’s first NCAA FCS playoff game are on sale online and at the school.
Cost is $20 for reserved and general admission. Go here to order online. Students can pick up tickets on Tuesday from noon to 4 p.m. in the University Center.
The 8-3 Bears host 7-4 Gardner-Webb.
