Games of the week
No. 12T Jones County, 6-2/4-0, at No. 8T Warner Robins, 5-3/4-0
Turns out there was a reason for a QB derby at Jones County that led to The Transfer way back in August. The Greyhounds’ Devin Edmonds has 1,662 yards passing, with 19 TDs and 7 INTs. Attempts to get Warner Robins’ stats, thus Judd Anderson’s, have been unsuccessful. But this game isn’t about them, because there’s plenty of talent all over the place. The Greyhounds have been more consistent, but the Demons have had three pretty solid games in a row. The playcallers are likely to use a lot of the playbook.
TSR pick: Jones County by 5
No. 5 Spalding, 9-0/5-0, at No. 4 Perry, 7-1/4-0
Perry is banged up at QB, with Colter Ginn out (broken finger) and inexperienced junior Cullen McDaniel stepping in. He stood up against Baldwin (14-21-2/0, 175 yards). A full home side should be treated to a full four-quarter game, but the feeling here is that Perry has a something-to-prove mentality.
TSR pick: Perry by 4.
No. 4 Mary Persons, 7-1/2-0, at Upson-Lee, 8-1/3-0
Upson-Lee hasn’t sniffed the fresh air of region championship contention in a long, long time. Nobody on this year’s Mary Persons team has sniffed it as a varsity player. Mathews Field should – should – have its best crowd in years for a game between evenly match teams with big playmakers on both sides. The Knights haven’t stumbled or bumbled this year, a change of pace. Can they handle the brightest of lights?
TSR pick: Mary Persons by 8
No. 2 Swainsboro, 8-0/2-0, at No. 7 Bleckley County, 7-2/3-0
The Tigers and their five-headed running attack and physical defense have done some steamrolling, winning by an average of 37-5. The more balanced Royals counter at 37-21. Swainsboro hasn’t been tested since mid-September, and will get one in Cochran.
TSR pick: Swainsboro by 13
Games of note
Westside, 6-2/2-2, at Baldwin, 5-3/2-2
Both teams have weapons, and both teams have inconsistency and unpredictability, and are prone to self-inflicted issues. Westside needs this one more for playoff purposes.
TSR pick: Baldwin by 9
Taylor County, 6-2/4-1, at No. 6 Macon County, 6-2/3-2
The records indicate a close game is likely, the Vikings amid their best season since 2017. But Taylor County doesn’t have that inspiring win, be it a solid thumping or edging an equal or better team.
TSR pick: Macon County by 25
FPD, 4-3-1/1-1, at Tattnall, 4-4/2-0
Two teams who may be better than their records. The Vikings still aren’t healthy – even at normal late-October standards – but they gave John Milledge a tussle. FPD’s balance, if everybody was good, would be the difference, but the guess is the Vikes aren’t quite back yet.
TSR pick: Tattnall by 3
