Central Georgians on initial state HS FB HOF list

Two legends from Washington County and from Warner Robins are among the 36 players chosen for the inaugural class of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame.

Another nine members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame were granted automatic admission two months before the voting was completed.

The main qualification was the high school career, although some found more fame in college.

Current active players are not eligible. The full list with more information is here.

Takeo Spikes and Terrence Edwards of Washington County made it, as did Ronald Simmons and James Brooks of Warner Robins.

Jim Ballard is on the list under “Pro Football Hall of Famers”. He’s listed as attending Ballard-Hudson, which he did as an underclassman until the family moved to Ohio.

Inductee Stan Gann graduated from now defunct Northside of Atlanta, and followed his high school and Georgia Tech career by coaching, including more than two decades in Houston County, 17 as an assistant at Warner Robins and then eight seasons as head coach at Northside.

The class covered up until 2006 with Creekside’s Eric Berry, not including Calvin Johnson as part of the HOF group.

Herschel Walker was the lone unanimous pick and only one to be on 90 percent of the ballots on the 35-member voting board. Charlie Ward was second, followed by Jeff Francoeur, Garrison Hearst, and Stan Rome.

Totals weren’t released.

The ceremony is Oct. 22 at the College Football Hall of Fame.
