Henley returns with solid round

After spending several weeks at home serving daddy roles to a new baby, Russell Henley returned to the PGA Tour and showed little rust from the break.

Henley is tied for 33rd after shooting a 3-under 69 in the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, five shots back of leaders Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith.

After having scores of issues with bogeys in his last several tournament, Henley went bogey free, a rare bogey-free round the last few months. He started on 10, birdied 13 and 14 and then finished the day with a birdie.

Henley has played only one other time at the Detroit Golf Club, missing the cut in 2018 after a second-round 75 erased a first-round 68.

This is Henley’s second tournament since the U.S. Open, a missed cut, that finished on June 19. He sat out the Travelers, John Deere, Barbasol, Scottish Open, and Barracuda Open.

A month later after the U.S. Open, he finished tied for 62nd in The Open Championship, and then skipped the 3M Open last week.

Central Georgians make all-conference

Tattnall grad Destin Mack of The Citadel made the Southern Conference first-team defense at defensive back.

The senior has started 25 games in three seasons, including every game in 2021, with 37 tackles, two more than he had in 2019.

Travis Glover, a redshirt senior from Dooly County, was one of eight Georgia State players earning preseason All-Sun Belt honors.

Glover, an athletics director’s honor roll pick in 2020, is a three-year starter on the offensive line, taking over at left tackle in 2020. He has started every game for three years, after earning Football Writers Association of America/Shaun Alexander, freshman All-America honors in 2019.

Macon gets the best of Savannah

The final meeting of the season between the Bacon and Bananas went Macon’s way in a 6-4 win.

That put the series at 13-5X in Savannah’s favor

FPD grad Noak Takac got the start, but Troy Britts got the win. Kyle Bork had two hits and Jared Weber two RBI for Macon.

Macon hosts Forest City Friday in the regular-season home finale, then visits Florence on Saturday to close the season.
