Around/About Central Georgia

Vandals deface Gray mural in Sandersville with slur

Back in March, Sandersville celebrated one of its most prolific native and athletes, Allisha Gray, an Olympic gold medalist and NCAA women’s basketball champ and Georgia state high school basketball champ.

Part of the celebration of the Washington County grad involved a huge mural on the wall of a downtown business.

It was marred over the weekend by a racial slur scribbled on it, just above the word “medalist”.

Washington County sheriff Joel Cochran said Tuesday night that three people had been arrested, thanks in large part to local security cameras. Reports are that the trio may have been involved in similar vandalism in recent days.

Gray graduated in 2013 from Washington County, started her college career at North Carolina and finished at South Carolina, helping the Gamecocks to an NCAA title. She was the fourth pick of the 2017 WNBA draft and went on to take rookie of the year honors.

She displayed the gold medal from the women’s 3x3 basketball competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics during the spring celebration.

Gray averages 13.8 points a game, 21st in the WNBA, and 5.3 rebounds, 26th in the league.

Dudley’s SE run comes to end with two shutouts

After winning a pair of low-scoring games, Dudley’s run as Georgia’s team in the Southeast Region softball tournament ended Tuesday with losses of 7-0 to Virginia and 3-0 to North Carolina.

And those two teams will play in Wednesday’s final at 10 a.m.

Virginia scored four in the third and four in the fourth en route to a no-hitter, Georgia plagued by four errors and being struck out 16 times, with only two non-strikeout outs.

Georgia outhit North Carolina 5-3 in the second game, but was down 3-0 after one inning in a three-error game. Ava Collins had two hits for Dudley.

Only two of the 10 runs given up by Georgia on Tuesday were earned.
