Wesleyan reaches conference softball final, falls
One of Wesleyan’s best seasons in any sport in a few years came to an end Saturday with the Wolves’ loss in the USA South Conference softball tournament championship.
Fifth-seeded Wesleyan lost 4-2 and 3-0 to West Division top seed Piedmont in the championship series in Demorest.
Wesleyan led 2-1 after two in the opener, thanks to a Marilynn Nesmith triple and an error. Piedmont took a 3-2 lead in the fifth and added one in the sixth.
The Wolves’ bats were quieted in the nightcap, held to three hits.
Central Fellowship grad Nesmith, Jasmine Staley, Kimmy Dick, and Tihana Zupanic made the all-tournament team.
Wesleyan beat Pfeiffer 6-4 and Huntington 4-3, lost 7-3 to Pfeiffer, and topped Pfeiffer 2-1 to reach the championship.
The Wolves finished 24-16, a jump from 5-5 in an abbreviated 2020 season and after no season in 2021.
Henley muddles through third round
For a rough round, Russell Henley actually gained ground in the weather-hammered Wells Fargo.
He was 4 over for the day Saturday, and picked up six spots, into a tie for 44th. That was a decent round for the day, 23 golfers going 5 over or worse, including second-round leader Jason Day, 9 over. Michael Thompson went from even, and in the same tied-for-50th group with Henley, to 65th with a 12-over afternoon.
Henley had only one birdie to counter five bogeys, falling 12 strokes out of the lead.
The Stratford grad is not in the field for next week’s Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas.
