Class AAA

Pinewood Christian 2, John Milledge 0; John Milledge 6, Pinewood Christian 5, 8 inn.

The Patriots tied the series with a solid and efficient pitching performance, holding John Milledge to one hit.

JMA went up 2-0 in the first inning of the nightcap only for Pinewood to tie it in the second. The Trojans took temporary control with three in the top of the fifth, Cooper Wilburn – who went six innings on the mound to start - and Keaton Prior two coming in on Briggs Eady’s single to right, Bud Veal scoring shortly after on Jackson Thomas’ sacrifice. Pinewood scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie it, one run coming in on a passed ball and the other on a double. But Prior stranded the winning run on second.

Thomas opened the top of the eighth with a single, and courtesy runner Justin England advanced n Blake Bellflower’s single to right. A walk loaded the bases, and Brady Rollins came up with the biggest hit of his life, but it only fell to the ground nearby.

He was hit by a 1-2 pitch, forcing in England with the lead run. Prior made it the winning run by stranding two runners with a game-ending and championship-clinching pop to right field.

The Trojans avenged last year’s semifinals loss to the Patriots, 15-11, 0-10, and 4-5.

Class AA

Gatewood 11, Terrell 10; Terrell 10, Gatewood 8

Gatewood scored 10 runs in two middle innings for a 11-5 lead, and then held on to win the second game of the series, Terrell battling despite five errors and five unearned runs. JW Thompson had three hits for Gatewood, Walker Roberts and Gavin Fried adding two hits each.

The Gators led the championship game through three, 5-2, and added three in the top of the fourth only for Terrell to counter with six in the bottom half to tie it at 8, and then win the fifth inning 2-1 and hold on for the state title, despite three errors.

Gatewood got two one-out runners in the sixth and a two-out runner in the seventh and couldn’t rally. Walker Roberts had three hits and Ben Brannen two for Gatewood, which got two RBIs from Caleb Riser, Roberts, Gavin Fried, and Brannen. Gatewood gave up nine walks.
