Four Central Georgia teams finished in the top five in their respective classifications, with seven athletes and one relays from the area getting a chance to stand at the top of the podium as the GHSA state track meets finished up on Saturday.
Washington County's Dontavius Braswell Jr. was the lone Central Georgia to take a pair of titles during the weekend, although several came close to doubling up with medals. Braswell won the Class AA boys' 100 and 200 on Saturday.
Both were by-a-hair wins over John Catherman of Pace, 10.72-10.75 in the 100 and 21.99-22.07 in the 200.
Jones County speedster Zion Ragins won the 5A boys 100, and was part of two second-place relay teams.
Perry's Rodney Bryant took the Class 4A boys 300 hurdles, and was on the second-place 4x100 relay team.
Zion Odoms of Northeast won the Class AA boys 300 hurdles.
Dublin continued a good weekend for Laurens County, with a win in Class A Public girls 4x200 relay, and getting a title from Jeremiah Green in the 300 hurdles. He was second in the 110 hurdles.
GMC's Walker Bloodworth won the A Public boys 800, while Brady Roper of FPD won the A Private boys 300 hurdles.
No teams from Central Georgia were really in the hunt, but Baldwin's girls, Washington County's boys, the boys from GMC and Dublin all finished in the top five in their respective classes.
There were plenty of close finishes with Central Georgians.
ACE's Nathan Haller missed a second state title, and by the thinnest of margins. The 1,600 winner on Friday was second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:22.47. The winning time? 10:22.46. He was eighth in the 800.
Roper won by a quarter of a second, his 39.99 ahead of a 40.24.
Dublin's Green was second in the 110 hurdles, barely, with a 15.46, behind a winning 15.11. He won the 300 hurdles by half a second, 40.15 to 40.64.
Bloodworth took the 800 by a little more than half a second.
Braswell took the AA 100 by a fraction, 10.72 to 10.75.
Jones County's 4x100 team was second with a 41.67, just behind 41.48.
Baldwin's Nafer Rapier was close in the 100 hurdles (third, 14.85 behind 14.18 and 14.43), and 300 hurdles (second, 43.96 behind 43.84).
Peach County's boys were second in the 4x200 by six-tenths of a second.
Putnam County's boys were second in the 4x200 by six-tenths of a second.
