West Laurens’ McClain announces his resignation

Kagan McClain had been the rare sign of stability in the West Laurens football program.

He started as an assistant under Stacy Nobles in 2011, and then succeeded him in 2017. Before Nobles, the Raiders had seven head coaches this century alone.

Arguably the most successful head coach in West Laurens history, McClain announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon on social media.

McClain has been a part of two of West Laurens’ three region titles, one as an assistant and one as head coach. The Raiders’ first football season was in 1972, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association website.

The 11-2 season in 2019, McClain’s Region 2-4A title year, was West Laurens’ first double-digit win season since 1994, and tied the 11-2 mark in 1990 as a program best.

Top-flight defenses were part of the Raiders’ reputation with McLain on staff. In his 11 total years, West Laurens gave up 200 points or more only four times, and only twice when the season went past 10 games.

West Laurens went 69-54 with McClain on staff.

He graduated from Norcross, and attended ABAC and Georgia Southwestern. He has also coached at Sumter County.

McClain also helped boost the program’s success in the weight room, which helped the Raider athletes who were part of the football program and elite wrestling program.
