MBKB: Mercer loses big lead, falls on road in opener

East Carolina rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit and held off Mercer down the stretch for a 77-75 win in Greenville, N.C.

The Bears were up by 15 less than nine minutes into the game, and led by 16 at the 2:42 mark of the first half.

"It's a lot of fun when you come out that way," head coach Greg Gary "Our guys were really ready to play, carried out their assignments, and played well together."

The margin was nine at halftime, the Pirates finally tying it with 10:26left on a Brandon Johnson 3. They took the lead for good with 8:08 left on a free throw.

ECU’s lead ranged from 1 to 5 from then on, Mercer managing only three points in the final 2:18.

"There were a few possessions where we gave them open shots in a critical part of the game that we need to fix," Gary explained. "You can't give it to them, as far as giving them open shots."

Jalyn McCreary scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half.

Shawn Walker Jr. had 12 points and four assists for Mercer.

The Bears welcome Milligan, an NAIA program from Asheville, N.C., on Friday in Mercer’s home opener. The Bears then head up I-75 to face Georgia State in the Panthers’ brand new arena.
