Around/About Central Georgia

FVSU pair on Black College HOF finalist list

A pair of former Fort Valley State Wildcats are among finalists for the Black College Hall of Fame.
There are 25 finalists selected from more than 200 nominees.
Tyrone Poole, a defensive back from LaGange, and former head coach Doug Porter are the Wildcats on the list.
Poole started for four years and was FVSU’s first NFL Draft pick, going 22nds to Carolina in 1995. He had 17 interceptions in 42 games, and returned 70 punts for 13.3 yards per return, also setting the school mark in the 200, finishing second in the national finals.
He is director of player development at Clark Atlanta.
Porter was Poole’s head coach, leading FVSU from 1987-1996, also coaching at Mississippi Valley State and Howard, and serving as an assistant coach under legendary Eddie Robinson at Grambling.
The 93-year-old from Memphis has a career record of 155-110-5, with only five losing seasons in 26 as a head coach. He was SIAC Coach of the Year seven times, leading FVSU to a conference title in his second season, 1980.
The inductees will be announced on Dec. 8.
