FVSU 32, Central State (Ohio) 17

The Wildcats ate up 8:44 in the fourth quarter and got a clinching score from Emanuel Wilson for the big road win, topping former FVSU head coach Kevin Porter.

Central State led 7-2 after one, Peach County’s Tim Alderman credited with forcing the safety.

FVSU took it on Troy Dendy’s 2-yard run, but the hosts got it back two minutes later on a 1-yard sneak.

The Wildcats lead of 15-14 late in the second quarter was preserved by an interception by Peach County grad Ethan Manns.

Kelvin Durham hit Hak Ellington for a 20-yard score and CSU answered with a field goal that was countered by FVSU’s. Wilson then finished off the 16-play, 92-yard drive with his second TD of the day.

Durham was 21 of 31 for 280 yards and a score and pick. Wilson had 89 yards on 24 carries.

Southwest grad Travion Searcy had six tackles for Central State, and Peach County’s Jalen Felts had three stops and a breakup. Central alum Martin Caines started on CSU’s offensive line.

Mercer 49, Western Carolina 6

Three different Bears scored before the first quarter was done, and two more joined the scoring column by halftime in what was a battle between two of the Southern Conference’s top scoring teams.

Only one lived up to that.

Mercer’s TJ Moore picked off a pass on WCU’s first play from scrimmage, and the Bears (5-1, 3-0) converted that seven plays later on Austin Douglas’ 1-yard run. The Bears ran and passed for two more first-quarter scores.

WCU (3-3/1-2) entered the game averaging 39.2 points a game and Mercer next at 36.6 in the Southern Conference. But the Catamounts of head coach Kerwin Bell turned it over five times and were held to less than 100 yards rushing.

The Bears were up 42-0 before the Catamounts broke the shutout with a field goal five minutes into the third quarter.

Mercer hosts East Tennessee State next at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
