          Dixiana Sims gave up a walk and four hits while striking out 13. Laney Bridges had three hits for ACE, and Brooklyn McGreggor had two hits and two RBI. Jaimee Hudson had two hits for the Eagles.

          A six run third paved the way for the Red Devils, who got two hits from Makayla Edwards.

          Eight Southwest errors led to five unearned runs in the opener, the Hurricanes’ 14-hit attack led by Taylor Rutledge and Jenna Parrish with three hits each, Rutledge with three RBI. Jasper County scored 17 in the first inning of the nightcap, and was sparked by a 4-for-4 game from Maddi Spieks and three hits and four RBI from Hailey Hooberry. Makenzie Diaz and Spieks didn’t allow any hits in three innings.

          Eva Crader struck out 11 and gave up three hits, boosted by Ava DellaDonna’s grand slam. Seven FPD errors led to nine unearned runs.  Shamiya Raines had three hits and four runs for the Cavs. Hannah Davis had two of FPD’s three hits.

Alumni Update

Austin Cox (FPD/Mercer) promoted to AAA

          Former FPD and Mercer standout Austin Cox was promoted last week to Class AAA Omaha, Kansas City’s top farm team.

          The lefty is 4-1 this season with a 3.600 ERA with 58 strikeouts and 25 walks in 63 innings, mostly with Northwest Arkansas. His debut with Omaha was a rough one, lasting two innings with five earned runs and three homers.

          Opponents were hitting .232 against him at Northwest Arkansas. In three seasons – there was no minor-league ball in 2020 – Cox is 13-8 with a 3.14 ERA, 238 strikeouts and 80 walks in 229 innings, and an opponents’ average of .231.

The organization’s No. 14 prospect is expected to make a run toward a Royals’ roster spot in 2022.

Some Saturday college updates from Central Georgia

          Quez Jackson (Peach County) led Georgia Tech’s defense with 10 tackles, two for loss, a sack, and a 23-yard fumble return. Dijmon Brooks (Washington County) had a tackle and forced fumble.

          Tae Daley (Northside) had six tackles and a TFL in Virginia Tech’s win over Richmond. It was a best for Daley at Tech after transferring from Vanderbilt.

          Ahmad Walker (Warner Robins) had two tackles, and half a sack in Liberty’s 45-13 win over Old Dominion. The true freshman is fourth on the team with 14 tackles, including two for loss and a sack.

          J.T. Hartage (Mary Persons) completed one pass in Savannah State’s win over Morehouse, and it went for a 31-yard touchdown. Shamarcus Poole (Washington County) had eight yards on three carries, Brent Carr (West Laurens) seven on one, plus a catch for 20 yards. Demarion Colbert (Upson-Lee) caught two passes for 40 yards and the TD pass from Hartage. Daniel Dorsey (West Laurens) had a tackle.
