Southwest’s Dupree reinstated, Cummings remains on leave

Less than a week after being placed on administrative leave by the Bibb County School District, Southwest head football coach Joseph Dupree can return to work on Wednesday with the leave lifted.

Assistant coach Robert Cummings will remain on leave.

The two were put on leave last Thursday as the district continued its investigation into the death of Southwest football player Joshua Ivory Jr. last month.

Ivory, 15, collapsed on the evening of July 26, and died later that night at a Macon hospital. The district stated a few days later that an early investigation showed “the school followed all GHSA protocols and requirements for practicing outdoors. Our assessment also indicated the school took extra precautions beyond what is required by GHSA standards for outdoor practices.”

There was no determination that heat played a major role in Ivory’s death, and an official cause has yet to be determined. That process may take a few more months.

Dupree, who fell victim in March 2020 to COVID-19, is a Southwest grad and is 25-52 in eight seasons. Cummings is part of a football family, and is a Macon coaching staple.

Southwest opens its season Friday against Howard at the Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Two Perry games called off for COVID

No doubt Perry couldn’t wait for the second Friday night of the season after it hammered Houston County 36-13 on the first Friday night.

But the No. 4 (AJC) Panthers now may have two straight weeks off. Harris County and Hampton, Perry’s next two opponents, have COVID issues on their campuses that forced the cancellation of the games.

Perry would have been favored in both. Harris County is 0-1, after going 6-5 last year, including a 14-10 win at Perry. Hampton is 0-1, going 3-7 last year.

The Panthers will try to replace those games before the Sept. 10 trip to Freedom Field to take on Veterans
