Early Olympic efforts solid for Central Georgians

Two Olympians with Central Georgia connections are off to good starts in Tokyo.

Washington County grad Allisha Gray is part of the U.S. women’s basketball 3-on-3 team, a sport in its debut in the Olympics, and Olympic veteran skeet shooter Vincent Hancock of Putnam County is back.

The U.S. beat France 17-10 in its first pool-round 3-on-3 matchup.

Gray had three points and five rebounds  in almost eight minutes. All four players played between 7:13 and 7:50.

The former Golden Hawk led the Americans with nine points in less than six minutes of a 21-9 rout of Mongolia.

The U.S. and Romania tipped off at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, with a game about four hours later against ROC.

Hancock is one of a decreasing list of competitors off to a good start in skeet shooting qualifying.

As of 3 a.m. Sunday, he is one of two with a perfect score after the third round of five. There were 13 perfect scores after the first round.

The next round of qualification is Sunday at 9 p.m. at the Asaka Shooting Range in Tokyo.

Hancock is in his fourth Olympic Games. He won gold in 2008 (Beijing) and 2012 (London) – becoming the first Olympic skeet shooter to win consecutive golds - and finished 15th in 2016 (Rio). He also has the silver in men’s skeet and gold in mixed team last month in Italy at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup

The 32-year-old graduate of Gatewood has moved his family – wife Rebekah and daughters Bailey and Brenlyn – to Fort Worth, Texas.

He is a favorite over Tammaro Cassandro Italy and Azmy Mehelba of Egypt. Gabriele Rossetti of Italy won gold in 2016, and he hit 48 of 50 targets after two rounds.
