Henley was cruising along, lurking, and then …
For the second straight week, Russell Henley was among the leaders.
This time, a steady round fell apart with a pair of consecutive double bogeys down the stretch to finish tied for 19th in the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
He spent the day within a couple shots off the lead, sharing it a few times.
A brutal tee shot on 15 went far right, into the crowd and up a hill. His third shot, a decent lie, was way too strong and left in a a deep rough, down a hill, almost reaching water. His next shot was too weak, and he ended up with a rare double bogey.
As second-place Watson was struggling, Henley fell from a tie for fifth to a tie for 11th. He was still a solid 9 under for the tournament, and four back with three holes left.
But the fall continued with another poor tee shot into the rough that led to another double bogey.
Henley regrouped and parred the final two holes, finishing the day 2 over. Henley had a tournament-best 55 pars, two bogeys and the two doubles.
Henley’s former UGA teammate Harris English beat Kramer Hickok in an epic eight-hole playoff.
Henley is taking off for this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.
