GMC JC softball opens national tournament play
Five Central Georgians – four players and an assistant coach – are in Yuma, Ariz., with the GMC JC softball team in search of a national championship.
GMC is the 16th seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division I national tournament, and get going Tuesday at 3 p.m. against top seed Salt Lake Community College.
The Bruins are 51-2, and have cracked the 10-run mark 34 times, with wins of 27-0, 22-6, and 20-2 along the way.
GMC is 36-15, and has won 13 of its last 15.
Sophomore Whitley Ward of GMC Prep is third on the team with a .374 average, and second with 13 homers and 57 RBI. She is the daughter of assistant coach Jeff Ward, a longtime multi-sport coach in Central Georgia and Windsor grad.
Jones County grad Mackenzie Kilpatrick is fifth with a .356 average. Autumn Land, of Stratford, leads the team with 21 stolen bases and is batting .290.
Chasney Thomas, a freshman from Hawkinsville, has played in 11 games.
This is the team’s third trip to the national tournament in the last six years.
