D stands for Dodge and D in championship win

Dodge County and Lithia Springs slugged it out for two halves, each frustrating the other’s offense.

Then came overtime, and it was more of the same, neither offense able to manage much of a real threat to score on a fairly bright afternoon at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta.

Finally, in the third overtime, on third down, with three yards to go, Ileisha Mitchell had enough. Lined up to the left of quarterback Annie Jones, she took the handoff and went right, got just enough of a seal block from senior Trinity Brown, and scooted into the right corner of the end zone for the 3-yard touchdown run and the Division 2 (5A-6A) state flag football title in the second year of the sport.

Dodge County finished 15-1, Lithia Springs 15-4.

Last year, the Indians beat Eagles Landing 6-0 and St. Anne-Pacelli 6-0 before losing 14-6 to Greenbrier in the A-5A division. The GHSA added a 5A-6A division, and the Indians topped Locust Grove 19-0, Rockdale 24-0, Trinity Christian 14-6, and Riverwood 13-6.
