Around/About Central Georgia

Mercer Tennis Classic underway

Qualifying continues Tuesday under the sun and moon at John Drew Smith Tennis Center.

The top five seeds in the qualifying draw advanced, top seed Robin Anderson in straight sets and second seed Conny Perrin in a tiebreaker.

The final player list is a little different than the originally released list. Madison Brengle is seeded first and Zarina Diyas second. The top five seeds are ranked in the WTA’s top 120.

A Mercer connection was added to the doubles field. Mercer junior Mary Courville, of Columbus, and new graduate assistant Andrea Garcia Fernandez will compete in the tournament, and are in action Tuesday afternoon.

Garcia Fernandez was one of Florida State’s most successful players ever, with 206 wins, becoming the first Seminole with 100 wins in singles and in doubles.

The main singles draw action begins on Wednesday, which is Macon Tennis Legends night. Action begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Tickets are $5 per day or $20 for the entire week.
