Around/About Central Georgia

Henley finishes first round strong at PGA

Russell Henley likely couldn’t wait for the back nine so he could start forgetting the front nine.

The Maconite finished the day with three straight birdies to improve things to a 1-over 71 in the first round of the PGA Championship in San Francisco at TPC Harding Park.

Henley is with good company in a tie for 68 th: Rory Sabbatini, No. 1 Justin Thomas, Richy Weresnki, Cameron Smith, and Cameron Champ, among others.

Henley had two bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine, standing a 4-over at the turn. He settled down for pars until the three birdies in a row to take some momentum from the afternoon.

Jason Day and Brendon Todd – a former Georgia player, like Henley - are tied for first at 65, with nine players at 66.

Henley didn’t compete in last year’s tournament, and finished tied for 50th in 2018, following a first-round 74 with 65, 71, and 68 to finish two under.

Lexington County pops Macon

Macon was done in by another big inning, this time five in the fourth as Lexington County won 8-4 at Luther Williams.

Macon, outhit 11-5, made it closer with three in the bottom of the ninth. They came on Jack Rubenstein’s three-run homer.

The Eggs and Bacon play Friday and Saturday, with Macon at Lexington County on Sunday and back home against Savannah on Tuesday.
