Dublin, West Laurens taking a football break
Some fields in Laurens County will be quiet for a week or so, with Dublin and West Laurens suspending practice for different reasons and different time periods.
Dublin will take this week off as a precautionary measure, which other schools have done because of the presence of a fever or other COVID symptom, but not a collection of symptoms, or potential exposure to somebody with some symptoms.
West Laurens will sideline itself for two weeks.
A letter from head coach Kagan McClain noted that “an individual in our facility” tested positive, and another player-related household had a positive test, but the player did not.
McClain said the school is contact tracing a few players and recommending tests. He said contact with the individual was limited, but “we feel this is the safest measure to take and is in the best interest of our student-athletes.”
The GHSA canceled the Aug. 21 and 28 scrimmages last week in hopes of still starting the season on Sept. 4. There is speculation that the GHSA could make another move and pushed the start back to October and play a shortened season, as some other states are doing.
Laurens County is a “red zone” because of a high percentage of positive tests based on the population.
Henley improves to a top-40 finish at PGA
Russell Henley got back on track with a solid fourth round to finish in a tie for 37th at the PGA Championship in San Francisco.
Henley’s Sunday 68 matched his second-round score, with 71s on Thursday and Saturday. His 279 put him in a group with Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods, and Webb Simpson.
A birdie countered by a bogey left Henley even on the front nine, with a bogey-free back nine and two birdies.
Collin Morikawa’s eagle on 16 propelled him to the championship.
Henley didn’t compete in last year’s tournament, and finished tied for 50th in 2018, following a first-round 74 with 65, 71, and 68 to finish two under.
Henley’s results in his last four Majors before this weekend: 2018 Open, 7 over, missed cut; 2018 Masters, tied for 15th, 5-under 283; 2018 U.S. Open, tied for 25th, 12-over 280; 2018 PGA, tied for 50th, 2-under 96.
Next on the schedule is the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., starting Thursday.
