Houston County football the latest to sidelines
A positive COVID-19 test by a school employee has put the Houston County football team in standby mode.
The employee had been in an area where many athletes had been. Facilities will undergo normal – by current standards – cleaning, and football workouts are done until July 20.
Crawford County football on Monday suspended workouts until July 16 after an asymptomatic player tested positive.
Mary Persons football stopped workouts after a positive test, and was schedule to resume on Tuesday.
Mary Persons softball is off until Monday after putting off the original July 6 start because of a coach testing positive.
There are likely other programs in similar situations, but they have not publicly released the information.

Mercer women’s golfers Carol Pyon, Laila Hrindova, and Lauren Lightfritz were named as All-American Scholars by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. A minimum 3.50 GPA is required. …
Signings
Central grad JeNya Wilder has signed with Coker, a Division II program in Hartsville, S.C., and member of the South Atlantic Conference, for women’s basketball. Wilder played at Snead State (JC) in Alabama as a college freshman and then at Indian River State (junior) College in Florida as a sophomore, earning all-conference honors. …
Dublin boys basketball standout D.J. Wright is headed to Brewton-Parker. Wright, a guard, averaged eight points and five assists as a senior. …
East Laurens girls soccer standout Sunnessee Moon won’t have to travel far for the next level, signing with Brewton-Parker. …
Covenant grad Brandon Davis has signed to play baseball next spring at Bob Jones University.

Macon holds off Lexington County
The Bacon led 5-1 after three and then it was 7-6 after four, Macon getting two in the sixth for the difference in a 9-7 win over visiting Lexington County.
Luther Woullard had a monster night at leadoff for Macon, with four hits, four RBI, and two runs. Robert Brooks at cleanup went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Macon got two-hit nights from Cole Gambill and Will Olson.
Macon used twice as many pitchers as Lexington County, getting four-strikeout efforts from starter Matt Litwicki, winner Landon Odom, and Connor Manous. Mikade Johnson got the save.
Woullard’s one-out, two-run double to left in the sixth ended up being the difference.
Macon visits Savannah on Thursday, hosts Lexington County on Friday and is at Savannah on Saturday before another intersquad game on Sunday.
