Redan’s bats led the way to an 8-6 win over Northside in the third game of their GHSA Class 5A baseball playoff series

Fullington cruised to 6-3 and 12-6 wins over Covenant in their GISA Class A quarterfinal series

Boston rolled past Cleveland – and impending free agent LeBron James – 94-85 to clinch the second-round NBA series and start full-time the speculation of James’ future

Friday, May 14

Grant Nicholson’s complete game sparked Tattnall past Deerfield Windsor 11-4 in their GISA Class 3A second-round opener. Jordan Corbitt pitched FPD past Westfield 8-1 in their opener.

Georgia College got off to a good start in the NCAA Division II baseball regional, beating Mount Olive 4-3 and Columbus State 5-0. Martin Dewald threw a complete game in the opener and Jason Nicholas in the nightcap

Not long after the season-ending loss, Atlanta has fired head coach Mike Woodson, GM Rick Sund saying the team wouldn’t offer him a new contract

NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg starts recruiting LeBron James to New York, whether it’s with the Knicks or Nets

 

Saturday, May 15

FPD survived Westfield’s power surge – albeit a bases-empty surge – to win 5-4 and sweep the GISA Class 3A series. Tattnall did the same over Deerfield-Windsor behind DeAndre Smelter’s complete-game, 12-strikeout game

Travis Richmond scored points in four events to help Peach County’s boys finish fourth in the GHSA Class AAA track meet, with Demarcus Robinson chipping in some scoring in the 400 and 800

Stratford cruised to a 9-0 win at Deerfield-Windsor in GISA Class AAA girls soccer playoff action, while FPD routed Young Americans 12-0

 

Sunday, May 16

Georgia College advances to the Division II World Series with Martin Dewald’s fourth complete game in four days, a 9-0 win over top seed and host Francis Marion. The Bobcats improved to 39-15 and will open in Cary, N.C. with Cal-San Diego

Jimmie Johnson’s NASCAR slump continued with a Kyle Busch win in the Autism Speaks 400 in Dover, Del. Johnson hurt himself with a speed penalty

Boston nipped Orlando 92-88 in the Eastern Conference finals opener behind Ray Allen’s 25 points

 

Monday, May 17

The Mets’ five-game losing streak came to an end with a 3-2 win in Atlanta, Mike Pelfrey improving to 3-10 in his 19 career starts in May

 

Tuesday, May 18

Whitewater had the home field and the big bats to sweep Jones County 13-5 and 9-4 in the GHSA Class 4A quarterfinal. Rutland split with Ringgold in 3A, the Hurricanes winning 11-3 and then losing 4-2

The Macon Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010: Joe Davis, Bill Fickling, Camille and Miriam Lowe, Gay McMichael, Jack Morgan, Jiggy Smaha, Jim Stuart, and W.L. Young Stribling. The ceremony was at the Monument room of the Macon Coliseum

Doug Esleeck joined the Mercer men’s basketball staff, replacing Mark Osina, a member of head coach Bob Hoffman’s original staff

 

Wednesday, May 19

Rutland’s visit to northwest Georgia came to a tough end with a 16-0 loss to Ringgold in game 3 of their Class AA quarterfinal series

Jason Heyward’s RBI double with two outs in the ninth gave Atlanta a 5-4 walk-off win over Cincinnati
