Monday, April 19

After 27 years and three stints at Tattnall, basketball coach Richard Reid officially announced his retirement, after four GISA state girls titles. His first such trophy came at Jones County in 1958, adding one two years later and then a boys championship at Stratford in 1971

 Falcons third-year GM Thomas Dimitroff  said 19 of 20 mock drafts have Atlanta picking Michigan DE Brandon Graham

 After a March incident in Milledgeville, Ben Roethlisberger violated the NFL’s conduct policy, said commissioner Roger Goodell

 

Tuesday, April 20

Jamie Dickey is announced as the replacement for John Paul Gaddy as Stratford’s boys basketball coach. Gaddy resigned to focus on his duties as admissions director at the school. Dickey graduated from Brentwood and comes from Prince Avenue Christian, and also coaches football

 

Wednesday, April 21

Westside’s Kareem Jackson is a projected first-round pick in the NFL draft in a day, despite a perceived lack of speed. “Once I declared, everybody was like, ‘The biggest question is his speed.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’”

 

Demaryius Thomas of West Laurens will be the guest of a cookout at his high school to watch the NFL draft, in which he’s projected to be picked early

 

FVSU names Percy Caldwell as its latest athletics director, succeeding interim AD Wilson Gosier

 

Ben Roethlisberger is suspended for six games despite avoiding official sexual assault charges in Milledgeville

 

Thursday, April 22

Westside grad Kareem Jackson went 20th in the NFL draft to Houston, while Demaryius Thomas of West Laurens went 22nd to Denver

 

Derrick Morgan of Georgia Tech was the first state player taken in the draft, 16th to Tennessee Atlanta chose Missouri LB Sean Weatherspoon with its first pick

 

Walk-on punter Trent Ditmer was dumped at Georgia a few days after an arrest on a public intoxication charge

 

The NCAA announces expansion of the men’s basketball tournament to 68 teams, part of a 14-year, $10.8 billion deal with CBS and Turner

 

Friday, April 23

Kareem Jackson was introduced in Houston

 

Georgia Tech’s Morgan Burnett is taken in the third round by Green Bay, 28 spots ahead of Georgia’s Rennie Curran, to Tennessee. Atlanta picked up Corey Peters of Kentucky and Mike Johnson of Alabama in the third round

 Central improved to 17-2 after  a 17-2 romp over Southwest on senior night, pitcher Tim Scott leading the way with a seven-strikeout two-hitter

 Georgia Tech coaches hope Saturday’s T-Day game answers a few depth questions

 Saturday April 24

Georgia Tech watchers were stunned that running back Jonathan Dwyer wasn’t taken until the sixth round of the NFL draft, going to Pittsburgh. Head coach Paul Johnson expected the second round at the latest.

 Five Georgia players were taken: Rennie Curran went Friday in the third round and Geno Atkins in the fourth. Reshad Jones went in the fifth, and Jeff Owens and Kade Weston in the seventh

 Sean Weatherspoon of Missouri was the Falcons’ first pick

 Tevin Washington stood out at quarterback in Georgia Tech’s rain-shortened T-Day game

 Justice French threw a 92-pitch complete game to lead Mercer to a 5-2 win over USC Upstate, with 23 groundouts

 

Sunday, April 25

Milwaukee beat Atlanta 107-89 to cut the Hawks’ series lead to 2-1

Chipper Jones returned to the Braves lineup after being slowed by a hip injury

Diana Danna (tennis) and Niclas Johansson were named Georgia College’s top student-athletes for the year. Sean Harrell was named the top baseball player with the John Kurtz Award

Softball’s Holly Oglesbee and men’s basketball’s James Florence were named Mercer’s athletes of the year at the school’s banquet.


Monday April 26

Logan Gray, named the backup days earlier behind Aaron Murray, met with Mark Richt about the future, which included the strong possibility of a transfer, which would leave UGA with one QB until signee Hutson Mason showed up

Houston County’s boys soccer team opens its 10th straight GHSA postseason trip at home against Pebblebrook

Martin Dewald’s trek to Georgia College began whith his birth in Germany, and he has emerged as one of the top Division II pitchers in the nation, hoping a 13-4 record in two seasons gets him some MLB draft attention


Tuesday April 27

Kareem Jackson returned home to have his jersey retired in a ceremony at Westside

Russell Henley was named the SEC’s top male golfer while earning first-team all-conference honors

Atlanta’s Jamal Crawford is named the NBA’s Sixth Man

The NCAA announced the appointment of Washington president Mark Emmert to replace Myles Brand as president. Georgia’s Michael Adams was reportedly a finalist

It’s been a busy few days for Mercer men’s basketball coach Bob Hoffman, who lost assistant Mark Osina to a search for a head coaching job and released Tevin Swann, Ridas Pulkauninkas and Michael Jenkins from their scholarships

Georgia College became the PBC regular-season baseball champs while sitting, thanks to Francis Marion’s loss on Saturday, a few days after head coach Tom Carty’s 100th win with the Bobcats
