Sunday's Daily News 'n Notes, Central Georgia's Scoreboard
The weekend’s Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
Central Georgians – including tourney MVP – help Gulf Coast to title
Coaches from Gulf Coast are likely to work on a pipeline to Central Georgia soon.
Alums from Mary Persons, FPD, and Warner Robins helped the Commodores to their first state junior college men’s basketball title since 1972 over the weekend.
Gulf Coast beat No. 1 Florida Southwestern and No. 19 Central Florida to reach Florida College System Activities Association Athletics championship, where it beat rival Tallahassee 71-63 Saturday night in Niceville, Fla.
Mary Persons grad Cam Holden was the tournament MVP, putting up 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the championship.
Warner Robins’ Jacolbey Owens had 23 points in the final, 14 in the second half, and FPD’s Maurice Gordon chipped in eight points and seven boards.
Gordon hit a half-court buzzer-beater to qualify Gulf Coast for the tournament in the first place in the regular-season finale. Now, the Commodores are 24-7 and headed to the NJCAA Division I national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., which starts on March 16.
Central Georgia Tech qualified for the tournament on Saturday with a win on its home court. So the national tournament could pit a meeting between former Demons Owens and Champ Dawson, both of whom led Warner Robins to the 2018 Class 5A state championship.
Adding to the memories for the local trio is the fact they’ve been without their head coach, who suffered a heart attack in mid-January.
The tournament selection show is Monday at 1 p.m. Joining 16 automatic qualifiers are eight at-large picks.
