Wrestling sectionals underway

Lamar County and Perry are the center of the universe for a load of wrestlers as hosts of GHSA wrestling sectionals this weekend.

Action started Friday at sites throughout the state, and resumes Saturday morning.

Most host sites have two sub-divisions of two classifications. Perry has a section for 4A and 7A, with 5A and 2A at Lamar County. Other sites have the other half of those classifications. There are seven classes for girls.

Friday’s schedule are for early rounds, consolation and wrestlebacks. Things get serious on Saturday around dinnertime in most places, except for Class 5A (Jones County, Veterans, Warner Robins), part of Class 3A (Central, Rutland, 2 p.m.), and Class A (Mount de Sales, Stratford, and Tattnall in the morning and Crawford County and GMC at 1:45 p.m.).

The top eight in 7A, 6A, 5A, and 4A qualify for the state tournament in Macon, with six in AAA, AA, and A.

The state tournament is at the Macon Coliseum Feb. 13-15. Cost is $14 per day, with a three-day pass for $34.

Coverage coming Saturday night and Sunday.
